Something for teenagers to do in Darvel

After the tragic incident and fatality in the town, newspaper reports pointed to the run down area and the lack of things for teenagers to do. It is worth pointing out that the recent bad weather has hampered some activities like the skateboard park. It is also the case that the Gavin Hamilton Sports Centre Sports Hall has been closed due to a breakdown in the heating for the past six weeks.

The good news is that the heating has been put right and the Hall is now open again. Teenagers can book sessions of five-a-side football, badminton, table tennis etc. on a casual booking basis for a cost of around a pound a head per session.

Organised activity every Monday from 5pm to 6pm is Double Dutch (8th February to 14th June excluding April 5 and May3) for ages 10 to 18 years. Jump to the beat, dance, cheerleading and double dutch skipping. Why not come along and be part of a team to enter the East Ayrshire Double Dutch Competition. The cost is £2.30 per hour but is free with SHOUT or young Scot cards.

On Tuesday there is Badminton from 2pm to 3pm meet new friends and enjoy a game the cost is £3.50 per court. This terrific Darvel facility has a dedicated team of professional people interested in helping and encouraging our young folk to a fitter and healthier lifestyle. The Skateboard park will continue to offer a cool outlet for young folk to release their energy certainly as the weather improves and the nights lighten.

Then of course there is the MUGA which has proved popular for the occasional kick about with a ball. There can always be more to do for young folk but they have to work at it as well. Let's look forward to a lively and safe 2010.

I think also we need to advertise what is also provided by the voluntary sectors in Darvel, brought at a fraction of the costs of some clubs, there are for the girls Rainbows starting at 5 right up to Guides at 14-15, there are Beavers for the boys at 5 and 10 months leading up to Scouts at 14-15, there are also Rangers available, there is a host of so many things for our youth, not forgetting the youth club for teenagers on a Wednesday at the Town Hall.
