Changes to garden waste collections in Darvel this winter

Changes are being introduced to green garden waste collections over the winter months in Darvel, and towns across East Ayrshire, with an ‘appointment-based’ system being introduced.

In a briefing note to elected members, the council announced planned changes to green garden waste recycling collections from December 2011 to February 2011 – and the standardisation of collection hours across East Ayrshire for refuse and recycling collection.

The green garden collection will see the introduction of an appointment based system for all residents, allowing the Council to provide its collection service to those areas where it is needed during the winter months when the volume of garden waste presented at the kerbside traditionally declines.

From week commencing Monday 5 December 2011 until week ending 9 March 2012 all green garden waste collections will operate by appointment system only.

Appointments will operate as follows:

All collections will take place on the normal day of collection, with the date of collection remaining as is published in the current collection calendar.

Residents requiring a collection, must contact Cleansing Services by the FRIDAY of the preceding week – a minimum of one week advance notice is required to book a collection  e.g. to arrange a collection in week commencing 12 December2011,  the request  must be booked by Friday 9th December 2011

Residents should request a collection when their bin is nearing its capacity e.g. ¾ full

All appointments will be confirmed by Cleansing Services.  Bins should be presented at the kerbside as normal on your collection day by 6.30am.

All residents will receive a leaflet detailing the operational arrangements for the winter garden waste collection service during November 2011.  In addition this service variation will will feature on the Council website and Community TV and posters will be circulated to local Libraries, the Local Office network and Local Housing offices.

Also, from Monday 14th November, the start time for recycling and refuse collection crews will be standardised across East Ayrshire. This will result in a variation to the time bins/boxes are usually collected.   As such residents are requested to place bins/boxes for collection at normal collection point by 6.30am on each day of collection.   This change primarily affects those residents who are serviced from the Kilmarnock Depot.

What do you think of the changes – sensible changes for the winter months, or will it cause inconvenience? Post your comments and have your say here on s1darvel

There are times when I dont  put my garden wate bin out hardly at all (brown bin) same with my blue bin if there is not much in it I'm pretty sure it is the same for most folks so I dont see the need to change hovever this I fear will be come a permenant situation as does all so called trials dont you think ? or am I becoming cynical?

does the black bin still go out even if the brown bin doesn't or has that changed too?

Suzanne Rush says

Not wasting resources running collections when there's no bins out is definitely sensible, but beyond that, I'm not entirely sure I'm happy.

As Estherre mentioned, it would be handy if they announced if/how that affects the black box collections.

Also, having to have any bins out by 6.30am essentially means for most of us that we have to put them out the night before.  Given how often during the winter months bins left out for more time than strictly necesary are blown over, scattering their contents all over the road, I'm wondering how the council intend to deal with the inevitable spillages due to the change?  Or are they asking us to sleep on top of the bins until the lorries come?
