127th Year Darvel Horticultural Society
The Open Exhibition and Show returned to the Town Hall in Darvel for its 127th Year. It was well attended and the number of children was encouraging for the future of the event.
The Judges, Mr. C. McGavin and Mr. S. Hunter had a difficult time as the high standard of flowers and produce was evident in all of the classes.Janette Struthers presented the significant trophies to the successful competitors. The Cups and prize winners were as follows:-
Sweet Peas -The Morton Cup (most points) Donald Baird.
Roses – The Sampson Cup (most points) Robert Hope
Frazer Trophy (best exhibit, roses) John A. Hamilton.
Darvel Horticultural Society Show best vase went to Robert Struthers closely contested with Donald Baird and Gill Flemmich close second and third.
Chrysanthemums – Wm. Morton Cup (most points) Mr. J. Todd. This was very close with John Bryson having a number of vase firsts.
Gladioli- James Willis Trophy(most points) John Hamilton
Dahlias – The Barclay Cup (most points) Hugh Graham
Others – Floral Cup (most points) was shared Maggie Zimmer with John Hamilton
Decorative – The Centenary Cup (most points) Mr. Robert Struthers. There was considerable competition in this class with Lyn Drummond, I.Paterson, Marion Logan, and Jean Drummond all getting 1sts in sections for their displays.
Container – The Bessie C. Roxburgh Cup Mr. R. Armour
Pot Plants – The Guy Speirs Memorial (most points) Trophy Martin Brown. Again this was close with Donald Baird who won the Aird Challenge Vase and J. Fitzpatrick all entering beautiful plants.
Donald also won the Darvel Horticultural Society Salver.
Blue Ribbon for the best pot plant or best vase went to Martin Brown
Fruit – The Bryson Trophy (most points) gave judges a difficult task with a three way tie Rena O’Brian, D. Gilliland and Evelyn Crawford all showing lovely fruit.
Darvel Horticultural Society Cup – classes 70 – 77 (most points) Mr. David Gilliland
David Gilliland won the James Armour Glaister Cup for the most points for vegetables
Also in the vegetable section the Railway Inn Cup for the best exhibit went to John Fitzpatrick
Who also took the Blue Ribbon for the best in the vegetable section.
The Hope Trophy for best in onions went to Jim McDougall.
The Winner of the Novice Plaque was Liam Newland, this becomes Liam’s property.
Others of note were J. Scade with the most points for a collection of vegetables and the best board was displayed by Jim McDougall
In The Children’s section there was a tremendous competition and Liam Newlands, Roan Chisholm and Matthew Drummond all produced works of art. The eventual Stenhouse Trophy for the
most points went to Iona Chisholm.
Eco for Schools with a flower grown from seed gave Roan Chisholm a cash prize and
Callum Penman also produced a flower and got a cash prize.
Darvel Primary School Class Shield for the best class exhibit went to Primary five(room 9) for Glorious Gardens. Primary 7(room15) came second with numerous portrayals of Loudoun Hill and third place went to Primary 6(room10) with fab flowers by the fab fives.
Darvel Brownies were worthy of special entry status with a terrific window box.
After the presentation of the numerous awards the raffle was drawn and the hard work was appreciated by the many patrons.
