The Old Folks Drive , Weeky Supplement and Advertiser 1909.

Extract courtesy of R. McBride:

There was some eighty happy, happy old people in Darvel on Wednesday. Through the kind and thoughtful initiative of Ex-Bailie Miller, who was generously aided and abetted in the good work by Mr.John Cleland Meadowbank and Mr. Harry R. Neil Glasgow all the old age pensioners in the town along with a number of their aged friends and cronies, were treated to an afternoon drive to Gilmourton and back. In all 55 old age pensioners participated in the happy hour or two's outing - 55 old age pensioners whose total ages put together made a grand total of 4167 years. Three brakes were needed to accomodate the party. One by one the delighted old bodies were gathered together until the whole party were ready to start. The starting point was Meadowbank and a "couthier" lot of old people was probably never before seen in Darvel. There were smiles-kindly smiles all round and it warmed ones heart just to see them. To see the old folks comfortably seated was the aim and object of all, and what competition there was, competition in kindness. Talk about a turnout! Everybody in Darvel it seemed was out to see the brakes drive through and not a heart but warmed at the sight. And as for the old folks themselves.Out in the sunshine - God's sunshine with the beautiful evidence of God's kindly benificence all around them, who can plumb the depth of their happiness - out once more in the open air with the green fields , the whispering woodlands, the smiling flowers, the fragrent hawthorn and the inexpressable loveliness of all things surrounding them - oh the happiness of it all. Blithe and happy they were all the road to Gilmourton, cracking jokes and retailing old farrant stories. Once at their destination Mr. and Mrs. Howatt were ready with a welcoming smile, kindly solicitude on every hand making the day memorable. Splendid accomodation was provided and good substantial fare to boot. Then after rest and refreshment the return journey was commenced. A triumphant procession it was all the way to Meadowbank. To their own doorstep each was driven and a great day in the life's history of Darvel's old age pensioners came to an end. It is worthy of note that 12 of the old folks were over 80. In connection with the outing 100 bags of toothsome dainties were provided which enabled the sending of one to all the old persons whom age and infemity prevented from joining the happy throng. The oldest person of the party was Mr.James Hamilton who was blithe and bold as any. His age is 88 years. To the generous providers of the outing - Ex Bailie Thomas Miller, Messrs John Cleland, Meadowbank and H.R. Neil - thanks thanks thanks.

Hi John

I am interested in seeking any information of births in Darvel.  I am having a terrible time, finding my grandfathers records.  I think maybe he was living a pretend life because I can't track him down anywhere through the birth records.  The only information I have is that I think he could have been born in 1899(maybe a couple of years before or after) as on my fathers birth certificate in 1933 Sydney Australia it is written that my grandfathers name was George Jeremiah Allan Clarke, he was 34 years of age and was born in Darvel Scotland, but trying to track his birth certificate is hell, no one seems to have any knowledge of such a person and I know that George told my father he spent his 16th birthday in Egypt in World War I,  but knowing he would not have been able to serve at 16 obviously he told an untruth. :-)) which I guess happened back then when young fellows were eager to serve their country.  But I don't know if he served from England or Australia no family members can tell me, and the ones that may have been able to have passed away. My grandfather died in Sydney Australia when I was about 2 in 1958, but I can remember him and felt that he loved me oh so much which is why I want to track his past. I was wondering if you might know a way of tracking some information through local churches or the like, I am really at a loss and starting to think that he changed his name as well as his age. My email address is ozjenny001@hotmail.com if you know of anyone that would be able to help me.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
