The Jamieson Family

by Valerie Large

My grandmother Jean Cleland Jamieson grew up at the Braes, Darvel.

Her parents were Alexander Jamieson and Margaret (nee Paterson) and they owned a lace mill in Darvel. The Paterson family farmed in the area.

There were 7 children in the family:

Bessie - the oldest, didn't marry. She was reputed to be her father's favourite!

Nicol - died in 1915 in WW1

Jean - married George Hugh Wilson, Carpet Wool Manufacturer of Kilmarnock.

Will - I believe also died in WW1

Alexander  - married Evelyn

Kirkwood - married Pitty

Margaret  - married James Morton of Newmilns

As a child in the 50s I loved to hear how my grandmother travelled around in a pony & trap - it sounded so romantic! I was too young to realize that other than walking it was probably the only form of transport available in the village.

Dear Valerie. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw your Darvel input! Just the person I have been seeking to enlighten me further about my father and his family. I have before me the family tree and I see that Margaret Kirkwood Paterson had a brother William Paterson (who married Helen Murdoch), Annie (who died as a child) and Elisabeth (who died as a young woman).

The union of Margaret Kirkwood Paterson and Alexander Jamieson, produced Elizabeth Wilson Jamieson, Nicol Jamieson, William Jamieson, JEAN Jamieson (who married George Wilson), Rex Jamieson (who married Evelyn Russell) and Kirkwood Jamieson.

I am a journalist and author now living in Ireland who is writing a novella circled about the life and times of my father and mother who were 'pioneer' farmers in Zululand in the thirties and who later lived in Durban during WW2

I would appreciate contact with you to help 'flesh out' the details of my father's Scottish ancestry.

Would it be possible for us to communicate via my email willruss_za@yahoo.com or by Skype which is 'hahdehah'? My mobile # is 086-057-8926. Could I have your contact details?

Valerie

I came across your post when researching the Jamieson Family Tree

My Father, Alexander Jamieson (Sandy) eldest son of Alexander and Evelyn Jamieson. When my Father died in 1983 we found family Birth Death and Marriage details recorded in the front of family bibles. As a minister he was obviously the castodian of these bibles. Sadly the bibles were lost but when we cleared my late mother's house we found the original pages. I have over the years gathered quite a lot of information.

Elizabeth Wilson Jamieson  1882 - 1977 Bessie spinster

She was stayed with my parents between homes in the 60s She was an active member of the Guides and regularly attended conferences.

Nicol 1883 - 1915 Died in WW1

Jeanie Cleland 1886 -1971 married in George Wilson in 1909

William Paterson 1888 -1917

Alexander 1889 -1961 married Evelyn Russell 1919

(sons Alexander William and Kirwwood)

Kirkwood  1894 -1967 married Agnes Pitt 1919 (Pitty) no children

Margaret Caldwell 1897 - married  James Morton

I have fond memories of " The Braes" as my grandparents home and the lace factory at the bottom of the hill.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
