Darvel is on the A71 road nine miles east of Kilmarnock and west of Strathaven. The Lang Toon was founded in 1754 by the Earl of Loudon and grew rapidly. In the 19th century a successful lace–making industry was developed, with mills served by the River Irvine. The town's most famous son is Alexander Fleming who discovered penicillin, and Darvel also boasts links to William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and to the 1st SAS regiment, stationed in the town during the Second World War. Darvel has a strong community of 3300 and hosts its own music festival every year. s1darvel.com has been developed to allow residents to share their news, views and opinions, publicise events and display photos and videos.
